Internship Opportunity: Business Major Intern Interested in the Non-Profit Sector

Are you a business major looking to apply your skills in a mission-driven environment? Our organization is seeking a motivated and curious intern who wants to learn more about the inner workings of the non-profit world.

Reports To: President (and other staff based on project focus)

Works Closely With: President, Controller, Program and Advancement staff

Type: Part Time (10-15 hrs/week), Flexible if needed to achieve course credit

Participation Mode: Hybrid

Job Summary: The Intern will learn valuable nonprofit management and business development skills by assisting with TCF project work and shadowing TCF personnel.

Duties:

Projects:

  • Communications and Marketing
    • Social Media Management: Draft, schedule, and post content on platforms like Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Collaborate with staff to develop and execute a social media strategy.
    • Fundraising & Engagement Support: Assist with digital or print marketing materials, such as program and fund awareness efforts, giving campaigns, or event promotions.
    • Graphic Design: Create or edit promotional materials using Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or other design platforms.
    • Website – review current website to improve functionality and update appearance. Work with staff to understand programmatic and operational goals to assist in developing new or refining current content.
    • Fundraising
      • Research grant opportunities, potential donors, corporate sponsors, or local businesses for partnerships.
      • Assist with drafting donor letters, sponsorship proposals, or thank-you notes.
    • Writing, Copyediting, Proofreading: Review internal and external communications for clarity, tone, grammar, and consistency.
  • Program Support
    • Grantee Site Visit Coordination - Assist with outreach to nonprofit organizations that have received funding from TCF in order helping to coordinate staff site visits. As the intern’s schedule allows, they can also join program staff for site visits to gain a greater understanding of the nonprofit sector.
    • Communications – Help to develop impact pieces by reviewing past grant records, drafting outreach messages, conducting follow-up phone calls, and working to track and analyze program metrics.
    • Grant Prospect Research for TCF and CAFs - Conduct research to identify potential funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, or government sources that align with the mission and work of TCF. This project will involve analyzing eligibility criteria, funding priorities, deadlines, and application requirements. The intern will prepare summary reports and a funding calendar to support future application planning.

Intern should be able to:

  • Exhibit proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and design tools such as Canva and Powerpoint
  • Ask questions, to assist in their own learning and understanding.
  • Manage their time and competing priorities.

Intern will gain:

  • Practical experience through hands-on work with social media, email marketing, and content creation.
  • Stronger writing and editing abilities across various formats and audiences.
  • Firsthand experience in nonprofit relationship management and learn how site visits fit into post-grant evaluation and stewardship.
  • The development of research, synthesis, and strategic thinking skills while learning about institutional philanthropy from a fund-seeking perspective.
  • Understanding of the nonprofit industry and an overview of how community foundations operate.
