The School HVAC Technician is responsible for ensuring that the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems within the school's facilities are operating efficiently, safely, and effectively. This role plays a crucial part in providing a comfortable environment for students, staff, and visitors and ensures that indoor air quality standards are met. 

Essential Functions 

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair HVAC systems, including air handlers, chillers, boilers, hot water heaters and related equipment. 
  • Conduct regular preventative maintenance on systems to ensure efficient operation and minimize unplanned downtime. 
  • Monitor and keep records of all repairs involving the handling of refrigerants, associated with all air conditioning, chillers, and refrigerated units. 
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC malfunctions, repairing or replacing defective parts as necessary. 
  • Provide emergency repairs both during work hours and after hours as required and directed by the Director of Facilities to prevent catastrophic losses of food and/or damage to the properties. 
  • Respond to work orders submitted through the organizations work order management system. 
  • Assist with the installation of new HVAC systems, ensuring they meet the required standards and codes. 
  • Retrofit and upgrade older systems to improve efficiency and performance. 
  • Use building management systems and automation tools to monitor HVAC system performance. 
  • Adjust systems for optimal performance and energy efficiency. 
  • Safety and Compliance 
  • Stay updated on local, state, and national HVAC codes and regulations to ensure school-wide compliance. 
  • Train school staff on basic HVAC safety protocols and procedures when necessary. 
  • Maintain detailed records of all HVAC inspections, maintenance, and repair activities. 
  • Document any system modifications or upgrades. 
  • Collaborate with other maintenance staff and school administrators to ensure coordinated efforts and minimize disruptions to school activities. 
  • Provide updates on major HVAC activities, repairs, or potential concerns to the Facility Manager/Maintenance Supervisor. 
  • Manage and maintain HVAC tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition. 
  • Recommend the purchase of new equipment or tools when necessary. 
  • Performs other duties as requested and/or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENTS: 

Education Required: High School or equivalent; Technical or vocational training in HVAC preferred. 

Certification Required:  

Prefer: A Grade A Boiler, Stationery, and Refrigeration OR Grade B Refrigeration Engineer, Warm Air Installer license(s) 

Experience Required: 5 years’ experience in HVAC maintenance, repair, and installation.
